SareeNaSorry Funshops

In March 2023, we were awarded the RSA (Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce) Southeast Local Grant to support our new SareeNaSorry Project!

This is a new, innovative project focused on bringing the local community and businesses together to explore deeper conversations on identity, pride and self-limiting beliefs through the joy of draping sarees.

Behind the name…

The project is called SareeNaSorry Funshop. The word ‘na’ in SareeNaSorry translates to ‘no’ or ‘not’ in the Bengali language.

We like the bilingual play on the name that instantly gives a feel of cross-cultural identity. We have created the word Funshop which is a play on the word workshop to set the expectation of a learning experience full of joy.

The Saree…

Poppy a brown British Bengali with short curly hair is wearing a yellow saree. She is smiling and spinning, her saree is flowing behind her.

The saree is the most inclusive item of clothing in the world, it is versatile and fits every ‘body’!

It's 5 to 9 metres of unstitched material which can be draped in more than 90 ways to fit any size or shape.

Steeped in South Asian history, female power and identity, there is a weave, pattern, colour and style for every personality. The Saree is worn by people working in agriculture, art, construction, politics and at home.

The Western world has categorised the saree as a ‘traditional’ costume, yet it's the daily wear of millions of people all over the world, it's normal, colourful, dynamic, deeply feminine and a lot of fun.

Our Funshop is an invitation from Poppy, a British Bangladeshi, to join her and have fun whilst sharing the love of draping in a saree.

The Funshops are safe spaces to share experiences through fun, glamour and discussion. It is aimed at people identifying as female and LGBTQI+.

It encourages people to unapologetically play with their vanity, a fundamental part of developing positive self-esteem. We know peer support is amongst the top protective factors for good health, so the overall goal is to create a community through the love of sarees and draping-up.
