Meet Our Founders
Poppy Jaman OBE and Jaan Madan’s careers started in two seaside cities on the south coast; Portsmouth and Brighton. Poppy was working with older women, mental health and minority communities, and Jaan with young people, social inclusion and mental health, but both were working in the Public Sector. Their work was about community development and the values, principles and practice they developed became the anchor points for the rest of their careers.
They met through a national programme called Delivering Race Equality In Mental Health. This was the first programme of its time with investment to deliver change. Its ambition was bold ‘to bring race equality to the mental health care system’. It succeeded to create a step change, but didn’t go as far as it needed to. They learned a lot about systems that perpetuate discrimination.
Their work together turned to friendship, and then love. They dreamt that one day they might work together; that they might use their skills and thirst for social justice to diminish inequality. So Re-Balance is the product of that dream. Their purpose is simple: to diminish inequalities with every project they put their name to, because equality and healthy society go hand-in-hand.
